Fiction

There's not much in here, just a couple of rough drafts written a long time ago and badly in need of revision. A Place to Run Free is the backstory behind "Demon Lover" and a number of other songs; Rambling Rose was directly inspired by "Rambling Silver Rose". Neither has ever been published, though they could probably be whipped into publishable shape if I weren't busy doing other things. Like recording a CD.

Hacktown/ (A Place to Run Free)
A Place to Run Free is the backstory behind "Demon Lover" and a number of other songs. It was originally part of a projected series about a space colony called Hacktown/ -- the premise being that hackers (in the old, positive sense of computer-lovers) head out for space after society on Earth becomes too repressive. It was originally written in the late 1980s and set a little after 2000 -- I realized later that it ought to have been set in 2038 (for reasons best explained in the last verse of this song) but never got around to revising it. At some point I want to collect all of my space-related songs and put them on a CD, tentatively entitled Hackers' Heaven (from this song).
Rambling Rose
was directly inspired by the song "Rambling Silver Rose" and a remark by Kathy Mar the first time she heard it that I took as a challenge. As I wrote the story I gradually figured out that it could be set in roughly the same universe as Hacktown/, but roughly 150 years later. Never mind that the technology projections probably wouldn't work.
